Houston Dental Crowns – What to Expect

Houston Dental Crowns – What to Expect

If you have teeth that have been weakened by damage, decay, or a root canal, a Houston dentist can help you protect what remains of your natural teeth with state-of-the-art porcelain crowns. A dental crown not only improves the structural integrity of a tooth, but it can also improve the appearance of your smile.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Modern dental crowns are constructed from a durable ceramic material that mimics the appearance and function of a natural tooth. A crown is typically used to restore the entire exterior portion of a tooth that is chipped, cracked, decayed, or compromised following a root canal.

Why Porcelain?

While crowns can be constructed out of various materials, including gold, porcelain is by far the most popular choice. It has the durability to allow you to chew your favorite foods with confidence and a luster, color, and translucency that can be made to match your natural teeth. They are also easy to maintain with regular brushing and flossing.

What to Expect When Getting a Crown

In most cases, the crown can be completed in two visits. During the first visit, we will prepare the tooth for the crown by grinding away the damaged portion of the affected tooth. We will then make an impression of the tooth to send to the lab that will fabricate the crown. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being fabricated. A second appointment is scheduled a couple of weeks later to affix the permanent crown to the tooth.
